Housatonic MA, Lonely Einstein and the Dead Porch Player.
In between assignments yesterday in Housatonic MA, I took a short drive around and found a lonely faded Einstein standing guard by the river. Then I passed by what I thought was a person playing clarinet on his porch and turned around to gather up my courage to ask if I could shoot his portrait. I took his lack of objections as a yes.

Always been a weird place, and magical, too, due to it’s proximity to the river (as captured so beautifully in Charles Ives’ ‘The Housatonic River at Stockbridge’ from his 4th Symphony, a movement inspired by the foggy forest walk taken with his wife after their marriage).

Paul, I’ve found myself in that little neighborhood in Housatonic, and always marveled at its layout and development, lots of small middle class houses, a few of what must have been small general or convenience stores, it has such a nice feel to it, except that there are probably no jobs at those factories anymore, and who knows how people are surviving there now. It’s funny how you stumble on to these little neighborhoods all over the Berkshires, that grew up in the region’s manufacturing age and you wonder what it was like when the economy was good. Totally different place, I imagine. Tiny little Readsboro, Vt. has similar neighborhoods, now kind of emptied out.
