Shut down Vermont Yankee!
Saturday 3/3/2012, a group of 50 people marched 17 miles from Greenfield to the gates of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power plant to send another message to the powers that be to shut this monstrosity down. Here is what the organizers had to say.
“POWERSHIFT is a march to protest the continued operation of Vermont Yankee – an aging, accident-prone nuclear power plant just 10 miles north of Greenfield, MA. The plant’s original 40 year operating license was recently extended for 20 more years, in direct opposition to the will of Vermont. It is up to We, The People to ensure the plant is shut down! “
The drive to the Nuke is beautiful along Rt. 142. Perfect Vermont scenery, bucolic and peaceful. The danger seems so distant, so quiet. Just another factory on the river. There is a bar just down from the plant that has a sign that reads “we support Vermont Yankee” I remember thinking that after the disaster in Fukushima Japan, Vermont Yankee would obviously be shut down immediately, I mean look at what happened, it’s the same design as those plants, it’s leaking radioactivity into the Connecticut river, how much worse does it have to get?
There are many events and direct actions planed for the entire month of march leading up to the when the plants license expires on the 21st. For more information on the whole issue and how to get involved Check out The Safe and Green Campaign and The Sage Alliance.
